IBMSECU Hosted Free Community Shred Days

Local Credit Union Helped Raise Identity Theft Awareness

The $1.09 billion IBM Southeast Employees’ Credit Union, IBMSECU, hosted Shred Days at four of their South Florida branches and four of their Atlanta branches during the month of October 2017.  According to the Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2014 Identity Fraud Study, someone becomes an identity theft victim every two seconds. This free, community-wide event helped raise awareness about identity theft and ways to protect oneself.

MicroShred LLC and AAA Security Shredding, non-affiliated, third-party service providers of IBMSECU were on site at the Florida and Atlanta branches to safely dispose of financial and personal documents. The event helped several Members and non-members free up space, eliminate unnecessary theft and security risks, and gave them an opportunity to get rid of old, outdated, and useless files. IBMSECU had experts on site to answer their ID Theft and fraud questions as well as provided free Credit Monitoring and ID Theft/Fraud Protection materials to attendees.  Free refreshments were served.  Also, this was an opportunity to give a gift to children in need. Attendees were asked to help IBMSECU help those in need by donating an unwrapped toy during each Shred Day.

Members and non-members were encouraged to bring up to ten boxes of paper documents. A list of accepted materials were listed on the Upcoming Events page on IBMSECU’s website.

Michael Miller, CEO of IBMSECU, stated that hosting free, ID Theft protection events and providing information to our Members and the communities we serve is very important. “We were very excited to provide this opportunity to our Members and the community to purge personal documents. This free event helped protect them from identity theft.”
