September 8, 2004 - Boca Raton, FL:
Blood Drive Held at IBM Southeast EFCU

On September 8th, 2004, just days after Hurricane Frances devastated much of Florida’s east coast, IBM Southeast Employees’ Federal Credit Union hosted a blood drive at its Boca Raton Headquarters. With hundreds of thousands of people without power and schools and businesses closed, many local blood drives had been cancelled. The local blood supply was becoming severely depleted as a result.

Fortunately, IBM Southeast EFCU was able to open on the first business day after Hurricane Frances, allowing South Florida Blood Banks to follow through with its scheduled blood drive at the Credit Union. Employees of IBM Southeast EFCU filled all available donation timeslots, and each donation contributed approximately one pint of blood. IBM Southeast EFCU is pleased that they could do their part to restore the blood supply to pre-hurricane levels.

South Florida Blood Banks’ Bloodmobile comes to IBM Southeast EFCU every 60 days. At least 500 pints of blood need to be collected each day in order to service 25 local hospitals. Even without a disaster such as a hurricane, blood donations are always needed and each donation can save up to 3 lives.
